Here is a comprehensive guide to NEVER run out of test ideas. Let’s dive in:
If you read my previous post you know the mental model I use to test, go check it out if you haven’t already. It’s a banger.
When it comes to testing, you don’t want to just throw shit at the wall and hope it sticks.
You need to do data-driven research FIRST to form a test hypothesis and increase the likelihood of hitting a winner.
Here are the 5 data points I use to come up with test ideas:
1. Google Analytics:
> Look at average session duration, cross-reference with https://niram.org/read/ to see if it matches up the average reading time of your page. If its shorter, test removing copy
> Entrance paths, look at user behavior. If 20% of your users that start on a homepage are navigating to a shipping policy page, test removing this and add shipping info direct on product page
2. Heatmaps> Watch user recordings and sort by “rage clicks”, this will show you bugs on the site and where people are getting stuck
> Identify any buttons and links that are getting a ton of clicks but aren’t conducive to buying and test removing them
> Look at scroll map analysis and make sure your primary CTA’s are visible above the fold
3. Customer feedback survey
> Use google forms and send out a survey to your buyers asking why they purchased from you instead of competitors
> Make a multiple choice question that asks what features they purchased the product for. I.e weather resistant, size of product, quality of materials used, etc.
4. Competitor analysis
> Use https://www.shopistores.com/ and search your niche keyword. Look at top competitors and identify common trends
> If you notice majority of your competitors have a UGC carousel on their product pages, it might be a good idea to test this yourself!
Results of previous tests> This is the #1 reason why it’s best to hire a CRO agency vs doing it yourself. We have run 1000+ split tests across multiple different industries and have identified common trends amongst them.> We know what works and what to test! Take the guesswork out of testing and outsource it
